On World Hydrography Day 2025, the Seabed 2030 project announced that 27.3% of the world’s ocean floor had now been mapped to modern standards, an increase of more than four million square kilometres in a single year. In 2017 the figure was 6%. It is a genuinely remarkable feat of measurement: a global, collaborative effort, backed by The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO, to chart the most inaccessible terrain on the planet to a consistent standard, and to make the data freely available.

Hold that achievement next to a typical estate, hospital, factory, or housing site. The water assets it owns and depends on every day, the cold-water storage tank, the break tank, the wet well under the car park, the attenuation tank, the culvert at the boundary, are very often not measured at all. A wet well with no monitoring surcharges and spills before anyone knows the pumps are struggling. An attenuation tank that is silting up is invisible until it fails to attenuate. In every case, the first sign is the failure itself, because there was no signal in between.
