Do ocean waves move water? Barely. A wave is a pulse of energy passing through the sea. The US science agency NOAA puts it plainly: the only thing waves transmit across the ocean is energy, and the water in waves does not travel much at all. The swell moves on; the water stays put.

Why does the water in a wave move in a circle?

As a wave rolls through, a parcel of water rises and moves forward under the crest, then sinks and moves back under the trough. That loop is called orbital motion, and it returns the water almost exactly to where it began. So the water goes in circles, not in a line, and the energy is handed on from one parcel to the next.

So do ocean waves move water in a straight line? No. A cork, a surfer beyond the break, or a moored boat all ride up and over a passing swell rather than being swept along with it, each tracing the same small circle the water does. The wave keeps its shape and speed for mile after mile, but the sea it passes through hardly goes anywhere.

How deep does a wave actually reach?

Not far. Do ocean waves move water far below the surface? Almost never. The circular orbits shrink quickly with depth and, about half a wavelength down, fade to nothing. So do ocean waves move water deep below the surface? Hardly at all. The teaching resource Exploring Our Fluid Earth, from the University of Hawaii, shows the same pattern: the orbital diameter, and with it the wave energy, drops sharply the deeper you go. That is why divers find calm water not far beneath a rough surface, and why the seabed only feels a wave once the water shallows enough to reach into the orbits.

What makes ocean waves in the first place?

Wind. Most everyday waves are surface waves, raised by wind dragging across the boundary between air and water until a small disturbance builds. The stronger and longer the wind blows over open water, the bigger the swell it grows, and that swell can travel far beyond the storm that made it.

In the UK this is why a named storm out in the Atlantic, tracked by the Met Office, can send heavy swell onto the coast a day or two later under blue skies. The wind put energy into the water hundreds of miles away; the waves carried it here. The water off the coast did not make the journey. The energy did.
