The case for change

Why a pulsing dose overshoots

A pump delivers its dose as discrete slugs and your analyser samples on its own interval. The two are not synchronised, so the sensor catches a peak that has already passed or a trough about to be filled, and the loop corrects for something that is no longer true. That is how dosing ends up hunting, overshooting, and then sitting deliberately high to keep the trough acceptable.

Slugs versus steady delivery

A pump doses in slugs your analyser never sees the whole of, so the loop corrects late and the residual saws around setpoint all day.

Common questions

Pulsation free dosing questions

The mechanism itself. A diaphragm pump delivers on each stroke and a peristaltic delivers on each roller pass, so chemical arrives as slugs with nothing in between. A pulsation damper smooths the peaks, but it is another vessel and another bladder on the skid. The valve meters into line pressure without generating slugs.
Because the dose and the sensor reading are not synchronised. The analyser samples between slugs, so it reports a value that has already moved on, and the controller corrects late. The result is a residual sawing around setpoint and an operator who raises the dose to keep the low point acceptable.
It lets you dose closer to setpoint instead of above it, because you no longer need headroom for the trough between slugs. How much that changes consumption depends on your chemistry, your control loop and your duty, so we will not put a number on it before an engineer has looked at the line.
No. A damper exists to smooth a pump’s slugs, so with no slugs to smooth there is nothing left for it to do. That is one accumulator, one bladder and one more assembly off the skid, along with the pressure it was quietly absorbing.
